  69.  The events detailed in these books are highly interesting and
  70.  important.  The account of the wisdom, magnificence, and
  71.  extended commerce of Solomon; the rash and impolitic conduct of
  72.  Rehoboam; the disobedient prophet; the widow of Zarephath;
  73.  Elijah and the prophets of Baal; Ben-hadad's pride and defeat;
  74.  Elijah's assumption into heaven; Elisha's succession to his
  75.  ministry, and the series of illustrious miracles he performed;
  76.  the panic flight of the Syrians; the history of Ben-hadad and
  77.  Hazael; and the predicted death of Ahab and Jezebel, and their
  78.  children, are all pregnant with instruction, and have furnished
  79.  themes for frequent dissertation.  We perceive in these
  80.  impressive histories the characters and qualities of men painted
  81.  with the utmost fidelity, and the attributes of God displayed
  82.  with great effect:  we contemplate the exact accomplishment of
  83.  God's promises and threatenings, the wisdom of his
  84.  dispensations, and the mingled justice and mercy of his
  85.  government.  The particulars and circumstances are sketched out
  86.  with a brief and lively description, and the imagination lingers
  87.  with pleasure in filling up the striking outlines presented to
  88.  our view.  The authenticity of these books is attested by the
  89.  prophecies they contain, which were subsequently fulfilled; by
  90.  the citation of our Saviour and his Apostles; by their universal
  91.  reception by the Jewish and Christian churches; and by the
  92.  corresponding testimonies of profane authors and ancient
  93.  sculptures.
